As a former high school teacher of U.S. History, I am now dismayed at how ignorant I was when teaching Civics.
The jury is the last resort for citizens who are concerned about the erosion of our civil rights.
The Founding Fathers would be appalled that the topic of Jury Service is not taught in high schools, all, across this nation. This is the "Court of Last Resort" for the citizens protection from out-of-control government. The Grand Jury has been taken-over by the institutions it was supposed to police, and to oversee, for our protection.
The courts are one of three parts of our governmental system, Legislative, Judicial and Executive--at all levels Federal, State, County, and Municipal. It is appalling that no one complains about the Supreme Court making decisions in favor of the government, of which it is part. This is a direct conflict of interest.
The fact that Jury Rights are not taught, as a part of our high school curriculum, should be the primary fight for this organization.
This fundamental, systemic exclusion from our public school curriculum is no accident. The government that oversees education doesn't want knowledgeable jurors.
We, all, should mount a drive to change this educational exclusion.
We must teach our future citizens this vital constitutional civil right, and responsibility, in high school. Look where we are. That educational exclusion is the root cause.
