There is a family-tree argument that William Moneymaker was married to two different women. Ann Harvey and Martha Ann Epps.
We are convinced, after much research at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., that there was only one woman named, Martha Ann Harvey, an no one else, married to our great grandfather, William Moneymaker.

Cherokee
Indians could not own property in Tennessee and Georgia, after 1840. Many stayed in the Smoky Mountians, rather than make the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory. Many Cherokees looked as white as anyone else, after 300 years of inter-marriage with whites and blacks.
Ann Harvey was born in Indian Territory in 1830-1834. Her mother is listed as Nancy Harvey. There is no man in the house in the 1840 Census, in which names were not given for the dependents--only that of the Head of Household. Nancy Harvey is so listed . We believe that the Cherokee heritage was covered up all during the late 1800's, for obvious reasons.
When I was a child, my dad's cousin, Nellie Sorrel, was the only one willing to talk about the Cherokee "grandparent", her's and my father's grandmother.
My Granduncle, Charles' death certificate, on the link(below) at his name, has Martha Epps listed as Mother.
In marriage records in the 1855 Knox County list, she is listed as ANN Harvey. In later years, she signed her name, and her will is probated, in 1902, as Martha A. Moneymaker. We feel this may be an explanation for naming one son, Major.
One noted Major of the Union Army, leading one group of Cherokees, of the several groups that walked to the Oklahoma Territories, over a period of months from 1838 to 1839, went to heroic measures to save several of the exhausted trekkers on the Trail of Tears. It is historical fact that many Cherokees avoided capture and stayed in the Smokey Mountians. After word of the thousands dying on the Trail of Tears, many Cherokees, who were imprisoned in stockades scattered around Tennessee, while waiting to be started on the "death march", gave up small children to friendly whites settlers.
