Marriage Bond for William and Martha
This $2500 bond guaranteed that the two were legally able to marry.
Note the spelling of Moneymaker. The scribe wrote the name without the "y". Look at William's signature. The spelling is with one "l" and no "y", either.
In the 1850 U.S. Census the box for education was chcekd that William could not read or write.
This is the Marriage License for which the bond was issued.
The spelling is also the same, as above, for the name "moneymaker", with no "y".
The mention of "ministers of the gospel having the care of souls." was to indicate the state gave permission for the ceremony.
This certificate authorized, by the state, the marriage of the two named. The record in the state archives gives the name of the magistrate, or justice of the peace, who performed the ceremony.
We found where many county records showed that the bond was issued but the certificate was marked, "no retrun." Which either meant the ceremony was performed that day or not at all.
