A ripple of applause, all around please, when one of "50's fossils" scores
into the big time. Or perhaps some form of spamming or a barrage of notes
would be in order for this note-worthy event, 48 years after 1950 .....(free

The US Navy occupied my time from 1951 to 1955. I was Editor of the
"Seabees Coverall" in Port Hueneme, CA and from there was sent in 1953
to COMNAVFE (Yokosuka), Japan as secretary to CAPT A. R. Bosworth and as
a Navy Journalist in Japan & Korea. I spent up to 3 months in Korea as a
Navy journalist locating and interviewing Navy personnel stationed in
Korea. I watched and interviewed the Seabees grading land while artillery
was exploding around them. A Navy Hospital Corpsman was severely injured
while I was in the process of his interview and the Navy Hospital
Corpsman driver was killed.
In 1953, I climbed Mount Fuji...
In 1956, I filed a petition in the Superior Court of Long Beach to
change my name from Gussenhoven to Young. It was approved.
My Uncle Fr. Fabian Gussenhoven, O.F.M., married Joan Dempsey (St.
Mathias Parish) and me in 1952. Joan graduated from St. Mary's Academy in
1950. Joan brought our oldest son, Mark, to Japan when he was six months
old. Gary was born in Yokosuka Naval Hospital, Japan. We have five
children who graduated from Pius X High School. Two sons are software
engineers and a daughter, Joyce, is Vice-President of Valley Bank in
Auburn, Washington. Daughter, Karen is Western District Service Manager
of GE Capitol Commercial Direct. Our youngest son, Brian is in the
Antique business.
We have lived in San Clemente, CA since 1977. We lived in Lakewood, CA
from 1954 to 1977.
I worked for 43 years in the grocery business and held manager positions
at many local stores. Those include Lucky's, Cole's, Fedmart, Unimart,
Boys, Von's and Accord's Market in Laguna Beach.
In 1997, I was presented with the National IRS Collection Recognition
Program Award (1996) for outstanding commitment to quality and customer
service. During this time I collected taxes (tried) in Laguna Beach, San
Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and San Clemente. At the time of this award I
had been retired for a few months.
At this time I am occupied with family genealogy and church
activities. I am a 3rd. Degree in the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of
Fatima parish in San Clemente.
. . .My brother Paul graduated from Mount Carmel in 1951 and my brother
Charles in 1945.

in letters to politicians who piss me off. (They all do). But I Love
